Anna Canteens, originally started to ensure every poor person gets a full meal, are once again serving people with dignity and care. Across the state, 203 Anna Canteens are now operational — with three running in Adoni alone.
Today, I had the opportunity to visit one such canteen located beside the Adoni Maternity Hospital, where over 450 deliveries happen every month. Patients, attendants, market-goers, the elderly, and daily wage workers — everyone is benefitting from this wonderful service.
For just ₹5, people are getting a wholesome, hygienic meal — rice, dal, sambar, curry, curd, and chutney — all served neatly by well-dressed, masked staff in a clean, peaceful environment. Several individuals shared their heartfelt stories — a man without family depending on the canteen for all three meals a day, a woman who finishes her shopping and eats here before heading back to her village, and many more.
This scheme, sadly shut down in 2019 by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government, has been revived by the new coalition government within just two months of coming to power. It is heartwarming to see the return of a program that directly impacts the lives of the poor in such a meaningful way.
I also tasted the meal myself — it was not just nutritious but also delicious. It made me proud to see how our people are being served with respect and care.
